Collaborative Learning Space

The Teal Project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (USA), has created this great collaborative space where physics students can sit in groups and have hands on experiences with electromagnetic fields and forces. In this space they hold mini lectures as well as collaborative workshops.

The Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrolment Undergraduate Programs (SCALE-UP) Project at NC State University (USA) aims to provide an environment for collaborative, hands-on, computer-rich, interactive learning for large enrolment courses. It aims to improve the students conceptual understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The 'Learning Lab' at the University of Melbourne’s School of Chemistry (Australia) is a great example of embracing new approaches to teaching Chemistry. It allows the students to work collaboratively and have a hands-on experience. The design was inspired by MIT’s Teal Project. To view a VR of the site visit:

The Collaborative Teaching and Learning Centre at the St Lucia Campus of the University of Queensland. This collaborative room within this centre seats 95 students and has state of the art technology. The furniture gives the room a spacious feel while still fitting in as many students as traditional rows would accommodate. Connected Learning Space

Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour Campus (Australia) has created a videoconference room that has a microphone for each person, space for laptops and a large viewing area.

Photograph provided by Southern Cross University. 'Conference Zone' is the professional learning space in the Centre for Active Learning (CeAL) at The University of Gloucestershire (UK). This space is made available to students and staff as a professional environment allowing them to get a real world experience with teleconferencing equipment available.

This lecture theatre at the University of Melbourne (Australia) enables students to have space and power for their laptops whilst in lectures.

The Access Grid room at the University of Wollongong (Australia) has a video wall that projects the streamed video of all other users from all active campuses. The active campuses can be Australian Universities or research facilities with an access grid room specifically to teach or research mathematics. The Graduate School of Medicine at The University of Wollongong was built in 2006.  This lecture theatre was designed for Wollongong students and students from the South Coast campus.  To give them access to all the lectures and demonstrations they have set up a video conference connection.  Students from all campuses can see each other and the lecture at all times.

Flexible/Innovative Learning Space

This small learning space is at Robert Woodruff Library, Emory University (USA). The space is small and intimate but has flexibility with tables on wheels, a lounge bench and separate chairs to have it set up for many purposes.

Informal Learning Space

One of the many informal Learning spaces at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) Stata Center for Computer, Information and Intelligence Sciences (USA). Here they use large benches and chalkboards to encourage informal learning among students, whilst making the area look and feel alive.

The Forest Science Centre at the University of British Columbia (Canada) has included a huge informal learning area in the atrium. The space has lighting, power and wireless for all users.

The University of NSW Engineering Foyer was designed for informal learning. It has bright seating, which, is not only functional for informal learning but makes the area look great.

The main lecture room in Chemistry at the University of Texas, Tyler (USA) is set up to allow students to have desk space for laptops, wireless connection and power. It also has dual overhead LCD projectors and a ceiling camera located directly over the demonstration bench to allow students sitting in the back of the classroom a clear view of chemical demonstrations. It has space for 180 students.

Professional Learning Space

Live Worm Studio is the professional Graphic Design Studio at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. The studio offers the students a professional environment to prepare themselves for professional practice.

The Studio runs commercial graphic projects for students to gain professional experience and to build up their portfolio's. Compulsory studio classes are also run through Live Worm Studio.
